Where SHG members were guests

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Over one thousand members of different women’s Self Help Groups (SHG) of Ganjam district were guests at the national Gramshree Mela that was inaugurated at the Berhampur stadium on Saturday evening.

It was for the first time that such a national level handicraft fair is being held on a massive scale in the city. The Council for Advancement for People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART) and the Orissa Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) were the joint organisers of this fair which would continue till April 12. The fair was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu in the presence of several MLAs of the district and District Collector V. K. Pandian.

The highlight of the session was women SHG members who had been invited to the venue by the district administration. It was an effort to bring about confidence among these women. These women moved around the 130 stalls. Embroiders from Ganjam district could be seen taking tips from their counterparts from Uttar Pradesh. Similarly SHG members involved in coir goods making had a chance to interact with those from Kerala.

Artisans from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar are participating in this mela. This mela is part of marketing strategy of the CAPART and ORMAS to provide opening to rural handicrafts.
