BHUBANESWAR: A day after his Andhra Pradesh counterpart laid the foundation stone for an irrigation project on the left side of the Mahendratanaya river, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday said his Government was considering moving the Supreme Court on the issue. “We are considering going to the Supreme Court on the Mahendratanaya issue,” Mr. Patnaik told presspersons here. The State Government was taking necessary steps to start work on building a barrage on the river, Patnaik said. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had laid the foundation stone for the irrigation project on Friday despite Mr. Patnaik writing to him the previous day demanding that no work on the venture be taken up till a joint survey was carried out on the spot. The neighbouring government’s proposed irrigation project has been facing strong opposition from the people in two blocks of Gajapati district of Orissa. The people opposing the project were of the view that the project would create water crisis in a vast area in Gajapati district.
