Minister inaugurates trauma care centre

Staff Reporter

OMALUR: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam declared open the newly-constructed trauma and emergency care centre at the Omalur Government Hospital here on Saturday. Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam inaugurated the modern operation theatre.

The centre was established at Rs. 1.50 crore funded by the Union Government. It was one among the 10 trauma care centres sanctioned by the Centre to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Panneerselvam said. Three centres including Omalur had begun functioning, while seven were under construction, he added.

The Centre had promised to sanction more such centres to the State. These centres would play a crucial role in saving the lives of accident victims, the Minister said. Listing out the efforts initiated by the State to improve the health infrastructure, Mr. Panneerselvam said about 1,000 primary health centres in Tamil Nadu were converted into 24-hour facilities.

Denying the allegation made by Omalur MLA M. Tamilarasu (PMK) that the taluk hospital was facing severe shortage of personnel, the Minister said that only seven posts out of 51 sanctioned in the hospital remained vacant. The government was filling up all the vacancies in the hospitals and PHCs in a phased manner. Mr. Arumugam said that the government had filled up over 2.60 lakh vacancies in various departments including health. A few political parties in the State were envious of the good schemes implemented by the DMK Government, he said.

Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj pointed out that road accidents claimed more than one lakh lives every year in the country. About 6 lakh people sustained injuries in the accidents. Tamil Nadu was one of the States registering large number of road accidents. The establishment of trauma care centres on the National Highways would ensure timely medical care to the accident victims. Maternity assistance was provided to 262 beneficiaries during the function.

Director of Medical Education Dr. Kalanithi and Director of Medical Services Dr. Vasantha were present. Earlier, Mr. Arumugam laid the stone for the construction of a bridge across Tirumanimutharu River at Rs. 71.57 lakh at Neikkarapatti near Salem.
