PUDUCHERRY: Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) M. Ramadass on Saturday sought the intervention of the Lieutenant Governor to devolve more powers to civic bodies as guaranteed in the Constitution. In a memorandum submitted to Lieutenant Governor Bhopinder Singh, Mr. Ramadass said the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Puducherry government had entered into an agreement for giving more powers to the municipalities, commune and village panchayats. More than a year had passed since the agreement was signed but the government was yet to devolve powers and allocate funds to the civic bodies, he said. “I shall be much obliged to your Excellency if you could intervene in this Constitutional matter and render justice to local bodies in the Union Territory,” he said. The representatives of the Federation of Puducherry State Village Panchayat Presidents and a section of the councillors belonging to the Pondicherry and Oulgaret Municipalities also accompanied Mr. Ramadass.
