Bid to nab traffic violators

Police acquire breath analysers

PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department has issued a notification with immediate effect to make certain areas in the town as ‘no horn’ zone and to fix speed limits on main roads.

As per the notification issued by Director-General of Police A.S. Khan, the entire Beach Road, Legislative Assembly, General Hospital and certain areas in Gingee Salai, Victor Simonal Street, Fransuva Simonal Street, St Louie Street, Rangapillai Street, J.N. Street, Manakula Vinyaka Koil Street, Fransuva Martinee Street, Marinee Street, St. Gille Street, Campangie Street, Louristan Street, Marine Street, Dumas Street and Romand Rolland Street had been declared “no horn zone.”

The maximum speed in Boulevard area, the stretch from Vengatta Subba Reddiyar Square to Ariankuppam bridge, Pattanikadai Junction to Gorimedu, Rajiv Gandhi Square to Iyyankuttipalayam, Subaiyah Salai Junction to Muthialpet market had been fixed as 30 kmph. On Beach Road, the maximum speed allowed would be 20 kmph.

Speaking to reporters shortly after demonstrating the new breath analysers and speed radar guns acquired by the Traffic Police Department, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Chhaya Sharma said action would be taken against those violating the order.

The department had bought two each of breath analysers and speed radar guns to conduct regular drive against drunken and rash driving. She said that orders had been placed for more equipment.

Ms. Sharma said a breath analyser would cost Rs. 1.10 lakh and speed radar guns around Rs. 48,000.
