Detailed project report submitted to NCEUS Tourism a component of Rs.152.06-crore project THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kollam district is all set to receive a Rs.152.06-crore ‘Growth Pole’ project that will focus on improving the economic and social status of workers in the unorganised sector such as cashew, coir and fishing. The State government has submitted a detailed project report for this to the National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector (NCEUS). Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, NCEUS chairman Arjun K. Sengupta said that five more such projects would be implemented on a pilot basis in the country with the intention of taking the benefits of economic growth to those working in the unorganised sectors. The other ‘Growth Pole’ projects are in the States of West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Rajasthan and Assam, he added. Tourism too would be a component in the project in Kollam district. The idea was to use the potential for tourism in the district in such a way as to improve the income status of the workers in selected cashew, coir and fishing clusters. The project cost would be shared by the Union government, NCEUS, State government, private sector and financial institutions. The project would adopt the cluster model development of enterprises, integrating various government schemes and providing the right kind of support to the workers for creating common facilities for their operational and marketing needs. It proposed a set of strategies with a five-year implementation period. The project was to be implemented through the District Industries Centre in Kollam. Studies had established that the fruits of economic growth were not reaching the workers in organised sectors in the country, Dr. Sengupta said. The NCEUS’ mission was to make growth inclusive in an economic milieu that was increasingly being controlled by the market forces, said K.P. Kannan, NCEUS member, who too addressed the press conference.
