To give facilities at Kannagi temple for ‘Chitra Pournami’ fete

Scheduled to be held on April 20

Arrangements made as per existing guidelines

THENI: Idukki and Theni district administrations have decided provide facilities at Mangaladevi Kannagi Temple on the Western Ghats for ‘Chitra Pournami’ festival scheduled to be held on April 20.

The approach road would be levelled and all bushes removed for the convenience of pilgrims. Two-ways would be formed in the temple to avoid rush at the gates. One would be used as the entry point and another the exit.

(Last year, one way was opened for public to enter and exit).

These decisions were made at a joint meeting organised by the both the administrations in Thekkadi on Saturday.

Collector S.J. Chiru said that joint efforts would be made to provide all facilities, including basic amenities to pilgrims on the forest path and on temple campus. Elaborate arrangements would be made to conduct the festival.

Medical camps would be held and adequate medicines, including life-saving drugs stocked. Drinking water would also be provided on the forest road and temple campus. One more meeting would be convened to finalise the work, he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Forests Padma Mohanty said that one-day visit of pilgrims to the temple disturbed wild animal habitat drastically.

Elephants took at least one month to use the forests near the temple again.

She also ruled out renovation of approach road as it was within the sanctuary. However, she agreed to remove bushes. A request by the organisers to stay on the temple campus till 6 p.m. was also denied and they were asked to vacate the place by 5.30 p.m.

But their request to allow the pilgrims to come to the temple till 4 p.m. was accepted.

Meanwhile, officials said that festival would be conducted and all arrangements made as per existing guidelines and advised not to frame new guidelines or restrictions this year.

District Revenue Officer, S. Thasanathan, Idukki Sub-Collector Rathan Kherkar, Idukki Revenue Divisional Officer Shiv Das and Idukki Superintendent of Police Sellappan took part.
