Congress wants TDP legislator disqualified

Special Correspondent

MLA’s remarks against Speaker create furore

Congress to petition Privileges panel to take suo motu note

HYDERABAD: The war of words between the Congress and Telugu Desam Party leaders touched a new low with the Addanki MLA Karnam Balaramakrishnamurthy (TDP) allegedly making certain remarks against Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy prompting the Congress party to seek his disqualification from the Assembly.

A day after the TDP member made these ‘objectionable’ remarks comparing the Speaker with a character in Mahabharata that is considered ‘derogatory’, Congress Legislature Party took cudgels against the former demanding that he was ‘unfit’ to be a legislator.

At a press conference here on Saturday, Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and others charged that TDP members of showing ‘disrespect’ for the Speaker’s Chair and character assassination .

Asserting such remarks attracted contempt proceedings leading to disqualification, he said that the Congress party will petition the Privileges Committee to take necessary action. “The Privileges Committee can take suo motu note of the remarks and initiate action,” he reasoned.

Meanwhile, chairman of Privileges Committee Gade Venkat Reddy (Congress) said that in such issues, the House can take up the matter and discuss the action that could be initiated against the erring member. The other option left is to raise the issue by a member and allow the Speaker to take suitable action.

When asked whether he could take suo moto notice of the remarks and pursue the case, Mr. Venkata Reddy said documents had to be given so that the committee could look into the matter.

Interestingly enough, he said Mr. Balaramakrishnamurthy himself was member of the Privilege Committee
