Fertility & Safe Motherhood

About 12-15 % of present day couples meet with the problems of Infertility. There is a sudden increase in the incidence of infertility in the past 1-2 decade. Multiple reasons could be attributed for the same. They being

a)Polycystic ovaries due to obesity

b)Increase in the age of marriage of women beyond 25-30 yrs due to career options.

c)Increase in the STDs & then the resultant tubal blocks

d)Increase in endometriosis (Mainly due to postponement of child bearing by women)

e)Environmental & dietary toxins reducing the quality and quantity of sperm parameters.

Infact male factor & female factors contribute equally to the cause of infertility. Beyond all these hurdles, how the couples are able to still parent a child is a true miracle.

Is Infertility treatable? Fortunately the answer is a BIG YES. Most of the problems are treatable. Polycystic ovaries which is an endocrinopathy due to obesity is definetly treatable with vigorous exercise program, diet & weight reduction & drugs. A mere reduction of 5-8% from the existing weight will result in cyclical ovulation and conception. A Hysterolaparascopy will address the tubal factors & endometriosis. Controlled superovulation and Intra Uterine Insemination will address the male factors & combined factor infertility. Severe male factor defects, non reversible tubal blocks have a definite answer through IVF – ICSI (In Vitro Fertilization & Intra Cytoplasmtic Sperm Injection).

A Couple must have a balanced approach in making realistic decisions towards planning their children. A safe motherhood with minimum complications is feasible only when they begin at 21-25 yrs. Hypertension, Gestational diabetes all can be kept at bay.
