THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Concession in train fares for senior citizens, girl students and AIDS patients announced by Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad in the railway budget has come into effect. Concession for women above 60 years has been increased from 30 per cent to 50 per cent. In the case of men, the existing 30 per cent concession will continue. No refundAccording to railways, the concession will be admissible on tickets purchased on or after April 1. In the case of tickets already issued for travel on or after April 1, the refund of difference of fares will not be allowed. Season ticketsThe free monthly season tickets available to girls studying up to Std 12 have now been extended up to graduation. The free monthly concession being extended to boys studying up to Std 10 has been extended to Std 12. These facilities will be available on season tickets purchased on or after April 1. The Ministry has also decided to grant concessions in train fares to AIDS patients for treatment at nominated Anti-Retroviral Therapy centres and return after treatment. The concession will be 50 per cent in the second class fares in mail and express trains. According to Railways, the concession will be granted directly by station masters on production of the certificate in prescribed form issued by the officer-in-charge of the concerned therapy centre where the patient is to be treated or has been treated.
