NEXT STEP: Parents and students getting information about college courses at the Excel Higher Education Fair 2008 at the Sri Ramakrishna Thirumana Mandapam in Coimbatore on Saturday. — COIMBATORE: If you are looking at choosing something different in a career and not the run of the mill, then a visit to the Excel Higher Education Fair organised by the Excel Foundation will come in handy. The fair at the Sri Ramakrishna Thirumana Mandapam has 40 stalls with different arts and science and engineering colleges exhibiting their courses. Some even have counters where spot admissions are made based on performance. Some entertain provisional admissions. According to Chairman of Excel Foundation R. Chinnaswami, the fair has something to offer every student. In addition to the conventional courses offered by these colleges, there are stalls put up by educational consultants, a community college and a marine college. For girls not interested in degree courses, but looking only at some diploma that would fetch them a job, then the stall to visit is the one put up by Ravel Community College. The diplomas in DTP Operations, fashion design and garment making, early childhood and education, and heath assistant, ensures the diploma holders of immediate placement, according to the representatives. What is most attractive is that one need not have passed Plus Two. Even those who have failed can take up the course. A novel course of study in nautical sciences is being promoted by the Coimbatore Marine College. Their four-year B.E. course in marine engineering equips a person to start as a cadet and rise to the position of a chief engineer of a ship in just a few years. The three-year B. Sc. course in Nautical Science enables a person to start as a deck cadet and rise to the position of a ship’s captain. There is also a one-year pre-sea training graduate engineer programme for engineers. According to the representatives from the college, though the fee structure for the course is high, the graduates get highly paid jobs once they complete their course. More than 20 private companies absorb their graduates in campus interviews. The fair is on till April 6 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
