SALEM: The State Government will allot more funds, if necessary, for the construction of super speciality hospital here, Health Minister M.R. K. Panneerselvam has said.

Progressing

The Union Government allotted Rs. 100 crore for the project, while Tamil Nadu Rs. 20 crore. The State had given 10.32 acres for the project. The construction of buildings for the hospital is progressing steadily, he told reporters here on Saturday.

The construction, which began in December last year, would be completed within March 2009. The hospital would have 441-bed capacity. It would benefit a large number of people in Salem and neighbouring districts, he added.

Development works

The Minister further said that the Government had allotted Rs. 25 crore for the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for improving the facilities and infrastructure development works.

Vacancies

Mr. Panneerselvam said that the DMK Government had filled up about 13,000 vacancies including 3,000 doctor posts in the Health Ministry in the last 20 months.

When DMK came to power, about 45 per cent of the posts in the ministry remained vacant, he pointed out.

Earlier, Mr. Paneerselvam along with Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam and other officials inspected the construction works.

Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj was present at the inspection site and held discussion with the Ministers.
