Revive Kamaraj rule, says Sonia

Tamil Nadu made “remarkable progress”…due to the long rule of the Congress in State

KARAIKUDI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday gave a call to the cadres to strengthen the party to revive the “golden era of Kamaraj rule” in Tamil Nadu.

Addressing a farmers and women’s rally organised by the Congress here, she said that Tamil Nadu had seen “remarkable progress” in education and infrastructure development due to the long rule of the Congress in the State.

Recalling her tour across the State along with her husband Rajiv Gandhi in the late 1980s, Ms. Sonia said, “The number of schools, colleges, dams, industries in the State stand as a testimony to the vision of Kamaraj. I have experienced for myself the special affection the people of Tamil Nadu have for the Congress and my family.”

Appealing to the Congress cadres to work unitedly and try to identify themselves with the difficulties and problems of people, she said, “I have no doubt that the people of Tamil Nadu will entrust their future and destiny to the Congress party alone.”

Waiver of farm loan

Taking on the opposition parties for their criticism of the United Progressive Alliance Government’s loan waiver scheme, Ms. Sonia asked what they did for poor farmers when they were in power. “We are not afraid … We will not be deterred and we shall continue to work for our farmers.” The Congress believed in bringing the poor of the country into mainstream economic and political activity to create an egalitarian and prosperous society. “No other party has been so deeply committed to eradication of poverty (as the Congress).”

Stating that the UPA government had announced the Rs.60,000-crore waiver because of the increasing debt burden of farmers, she said the loans would be written off before June 30.

Detailing the steps taken by the Union government to revive agriculture, she said farm credit, which stood at Rs.83,000 crore during the National Democratic Alliance regime, had been increased to Rs.2.80 lakh crore in 2008-09. Besides, it had brought down the rate of interest on crop loans from 10 to 7 per cent.

It had also allotted Rs.20,000 crore for providing assured irrigation for one crore hectares of land.

Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the party should conduct conferences in all districts to lay the foundation for revival of the Kamaraj rule.

Minister for Statistics and Project Implementation G.K. Vasan said that though the party was not in power for the past 40 years, it had proved that no other party could form a government in Tamil Nadu without the support of the Congress.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnassamy and Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan spoke.
