TIRUCHI: Passport adalats would be conducted every month to redress the grievance of applicants, the Regional Passport Officer, S. Balachandran has said.

The adalats would be held at the Passport Office on the first Saturday of every month, Mr. Balachandran told The Hindu.

A Passport Adalat, for applicants from all the 16 districts that were under the jurisdiction of the Tiruchi Regional Passport Office prior to the establishment of the Madurai Office, was held at the office here on Saturday. Though the office was holding adalats in the districts, conducting the event at the Regional Office enabled immediate redressal of grievances as all records were available at hand, he said.

The adalat attracted 727 applicants, who had not received their passports. Despite Saturday being a holiday, the entire office staff was mobilised to conduct the adalat. Given the large number of applicants who turned up, processing of their representations went on till late in the evening.

Mr. Balachandran said that nearly 90 per cent of the cases represented at the adalat were resolved.

Minor children and senior citizens were issued passports on the spot. For the rest, passports would be issued within a week.

In other cases, the applicants were explained the reasons for the delay in issuing the passports.
