Tuticorin: The Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT)plans to recruit more number of ‘pilots’ (those who board the incoming ships at outer harbour and guide it to berths) and give advanced training to sailors on safety parameters during the current financial year, to strengthen port operations, according to its Deputy Chairman, A. Subbiah.

Speaking at the 45th National Maritime Day celebrations organised by the TPT at Berth 8 here on Saturday, he said that three pilots would be inducted into the service through an interview to be held this month.

Value-addition

“The appointment will take the total number of pilots on the permanent payroll of the TPT to five, besides the three pilots who are employed on a contract basis,” he added.

As regards the training to sailors, he said that the move would give value-addition to their profession and enable them to cope with the changing demands in the maritime trade.

Increase in incentives

Plans were also afoot to increase the incentives disbursed to the sailors substantially to reduce attrition.

Commemorating the occasion, three tugs and an equal number of pilot launches of the Tuticorin Port Trust displayed their prowess.

K. Allaudin, Secretary (Highways) to the State Government, was the special invitee at the function.

Earlier, Mr. Subbiah laid a wreath at the memorial of sailors who died in harness, in the town.
