Raids on U.P. jails

LUCKNOW: Simultaneous raids were conducted on 14 jails across Uttar Pradesh over the weekend. The raids, which began at 1 a.m. on Friday, were led by the district magistrates and district police chiefs.

The raids were conducted in Aligarh, Allahabad, Meerut, Bareilly, Rae Bareli, Bahraich, Bulandshahr, Ghazipur, Sultanpur, Budaun, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kanpur City and Varanasi.

The raids proved to be a damp squib as only bidi bundles, cigarette packets, blades, matchboxes, sowing machine, electric irons, playing cards and some cash was seized by the raiding parties.
