Private companies roped in for drinking water schemes

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government signed agreements with two private companies on Saturday for launching two new drinking water supply schemes worth Rs.827.08 crore in the desert districts of Barmer and Nagaur. The two projects constitute the latest initiative taken under the public-private partnership model adopted in the State.

Water Resources Minister Sanwarlal Jat called upon the private players to complete the work in the scheduled time-frame to provide relief during summer to people living in remote villages. “The benefits will accrue to villagers if the work is done with punctuality and sincerity,” he said.

The first scheme, pertaining to drinking water supply to 120 villages in Jayal tehsil of Nagaur district, will be executed at a cost of Rs.148.42 crore. It will provide 13 million litres a day (MLD) water from the purification plant at Matasukh mines by April next year.

The Public Health Engineering Department’s Executive Engineer, G. R. Makar, signed the agreement on behalf of the State Government, while Dilip Solanki of the Hyderabad-based Ramki group signed the document on behalf of his institution.

The second scheme – Barmer lift water project – will supply drinking water to 162 villages in Jaisalmer district and 529 villages in Barmer district as well as Barmer town and will be implemented at a cost of Rs.688.66 crore. Larson and Toubro was assigned the task of executing the scheme by September 2009.
