Kochi: The rupee appreciation and the raw material crunch have affected seafood exports from India with provisional figures indicating a 12 per cent fall in exports from April 2007 to February this year. Quantity-wise the fall is likely to be 16 per cent and value wise, 12 per cent. The fall in dollar value was one per cent, sources in the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) said. About 4,75,200 tonnes of seafood was exported during the 11 months from April last year, fetching Rs.6,770.52 crore for the country. In dollar terms, it was 1,684.64 million dollars. During the corresponding period in 2006-07, about 5,66,035 tonnes, valued at Rs.7,718.51 crore was exported. The dollar value was 1,703.7 million dollars. India had exported a record 6,12,641 tonnes of seafood valued at Rs.8,363.53 crore during 2006-07, an increase of 19.62 per cent in quantity and 15.43 per cent in rupee value when compared to 2005-06, the sources said. While the fall in exports was mainly to the U.S. and Japanese markets, exports to Europe had not been affected. The exporters had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and apprised him of the problems being faced by the fisheries sector in the country. The sector was now faced with its biggest crisis caused by the strengthening of the Rupee by more than 15 per cent, the increase in fuel price by more than 80 per cent, the anti-dumping duty levied by the U.S. government and the over supply of shrimps.— PTI
