Kottayam boys enter final

KOCHI: Elizabeth Hillarios was in sparkling form as Kozhikode jolted defending champion Kannur and marched into the girls’ final of the 35th State sub-junior basketball championship at the Sacred Heart School Courts here on Saturday.

The results: Semifinals: Boys: Kottayam 37 (Raju Chacko 14, Jerin Johnson 12) bt Kannur 21(Tins Thomas 12, Albin Babu 10).

Girls: Kozhikode 21 (Elizabath Hillarios 10) bt Kannur 9.

Friday’s match: Boys quarterfinal: Kottayam 34 bt Pathanamthitta 15.

Twenty20 cricket

The second Muthoot Pappachan Foundation Twenty20 cricket tournament, organised by the Ernakulam Cricket Club, begins at the BPCL Kochi Refinery Ground, Ambalamugal, on Sunday.

Nineteen teams, including State Bank of Travancore, Cordiant Tripunithura CC, Cordiant Sports Foundation, Globstar Telecom, Jolly Rovers and host Muthoot ECC, will figure in the week-long event.

Nayanar football

Ferroviaria (Brazil) will take on Kerala XI in the opening match of the second E.K. Nayanar Memorial Gold Cup international football tournament at the Municipal Jawahar Stadium here on April 14.

The other foreign teams in the fray are CODFAC (Argentina) and Bayelsa FC (Nigeria). Sporting Clube de Goa, Mohammedan Sporting, INSC, Manipur and Air-India complete the line-up.

The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knock-out basis. The final will be played on April 29 and the winner will take home the cup made of 151 sovereigns of gold.

The Kerala Chief Minister, V.S. Achyuthanandan, will inaugurate the tournament.
