KOLKATA: The top-seeded Indian men’s recurve team, comprising Mangal Singh Champia, Jayanta Talukdar and Rahul Banerjee, made a mess of its chances of figuring in the final by losing to fifth seed Australia 211-217 in the team championship in the first World Cup archery meet at Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic on Friday. After being equal at 54 at the end of first six arrows with Australia, one of the Indian archers failed to shoot an arrow within the stipulated time in the second end of six arrows that cost India a place in the final. India lost by six points, according to information received here on Saturday. India, after getting a bye in the first round, outshot France 224-219 before coming a cropper against the Aussies. India would play Italy, led by Olympic individual champion Marco Galiazzo, for the bronze medal. Meanwhile, Indian women won against Mexico 196-194 in the first round, but went down to Italy 209-212. Dola Banerjee, L. Bombayla Devi and V. Pranitha formed the team. In the compound bow section, both the men’s and women’s teams bowed out in the first round. The 11th ranked men lost to sixth ranked Great Britain 212-222, while the seventh ranked women went down to the second ranked Russian Federation 218-223. Tarundeep Rai would be the other Indian in contention for a bronze medal in the men’s recurve individual section. — Special Correspondent
