Thiruvananthapuram: The platinum jubilee celebrations of the St. Mary’s Queen of Peace pro-Cathedral at Palayam here will conclude here on Sunday. The cathedral, which was the first church of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, dates back to 1933 when it was converted from a cinema hall at the same location. It was known by the name Thakarapally (Tin Church) because of its tin roof. The cathedral retained all the features of the cinema hall including the seating arrangements and balcony until 1985 when it was pulled down to construct a new structure. In 1991, the new cathedral was dedicated by Bishop Benedict Mar Gregorios. The benches at the rear of the existing cathedral date back to the theatre days. The word ‘peace’ inscribed in Sanskrit, Greek and Latin at the entrance gives the cathedral its name Queen of Peace. Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate the valedictory which will be marked by an all-religion conference. Catholicos Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis will preside over the function. The head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore, Uthradam Tirunal Marthanda Varma, and Palayam Imam P.K. Hamza Moulavi Farooqi are among those scheduled to attend.
