Bangalore: The third and final round of “Samudayadatta Shale” programme will be held on Wednesday for government primary schools and Thursday for government high schools across the State. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Kumar G. Naik, Commissioner for Public Instruction, said this year, the department had identified three focus areas for the programme — attendance, results and capabilities. He said that the three areas would be covered by teachers during their interaction with parents. “This year, we have introduced the student diary. Teachers will write their comments with regard to the child’s performance, attendance and attentiveness in class. They will also make a note of the child’s strengths and weaknesses so that the parents will have an idea and help the child get better during the vacations,” he said. Another measure is encouraging children’s talents. Mr. Naik said that children would be encouraged to participate in cultural programmes based on what they have learnt at school all year. To create awareness among parents about the relation that attendance has with learning, the department will classify children according to their attendance. Good recordVandita Sharma, State Project Director, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, said that a study conducted by the NCERT in 2006-07 showed that Karnataka was one of the States with a good attendance percentage. “According to the study, the average student attendance is 86 per cent. The percentage may be good, but we need to improve it. We are taking steps to ensure that attendance percentage increases,” she said. Ms. Sharma said that in the “Chinnara Angala” programme, the department had added extra-curricular activities to make it more interesting for students. “We have ensured that the child learns in an interactive manner. The programme, which is like a bridge course for children out of school, will take off on April 15. Children covered under the remedial teaching programme will also be included,” she added.
