Call for action: Sudha Sundarraman, general secretary of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association, inaugurating a women lawyers’ convention in Kochi on Sunday. –

KOCHI: Sudha Sundarraman, general secretary of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association, has said women’s representation in legislative bodies in Pakistan and Afghanistan is better than in India.

Speaking after opening the women lawyers’ convention organised by the All-India Lawyers’ Union, Ms. Sundarraman said it was only the Left parties that had consistently stood for the 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and the State Assemblies.

She said the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act was not effectively implemented. Pointing out that honour killings of inter-caste couples were still being ordered by caste panchayats in many north Indian States such as Haryana, she called for a law against it.

She urged women lawyers to get involved in gender-sensitive legislative business and policymaking.

She also wanted them to help poor women needing free legal aid.
