Polls: IUML to field 50 candidates

‘Possibilities of alliance with like-minded

parties will be explored’

State-level convention of Muslims to be held

in Bangalore

Belgaum: The State unit of the Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) has decided to field at least 50 candidates in the coming Assembly elections.

The decision to this effect was taken in consultation with all the district units of the IUML and the Tipu Sultan National Republic Party (TSNRP) on April 1.

According to Belgaum district unit president of the IUML Mirza Mohammed Medhi here on Sunday, the Muslim Democratic Front of Karnataka, headed by Abdus Samad Siddiqqui, former MP, along with the IUML and the TSNRP will be working for the success of the candidates in the elections.

IUML State unit general secretary Asgar Rafiuddin and TSNRP president Rizwanula Sheriff will lead the election campaign.

Mr. Mehdi said both the IUML and the TSNRP were concerned over the plight of Muslims, majority of whom remain backward socially, economically, educationally, culturally and politically.

Even after six decades of Independence, majority of the Muslims were yet to become part of the national mainstream of development and progress, he said. He said that these organisations would explore the possibilities of alliance with like-minded parties by eliciting their support for the 50 candidates.

A State-level convention of Muslims will be organised in Bangalore in the third week of this month.

Muslims had not properly understood the value of their votes, Mr. Mehdi said and added that along with election campaign, a campaign to create awareness in this regard would be launched.
