I have joined Congress not for power: Prakash

Staff Correspondent

Says he will not pressure leadership for ticket

DAVANGERE: I have joined the Congress not for power and position, but to serve people through the party, M.P. Prakash, former Deputy Chief Minister, has said.

Addressing a public meeting at Harpanahalli on Saturday, Mr. Prakash said though he had opposed the party for the past 40 years, he had joined it as his ideology was similar to that of the Congress now.

Criticising the Janata Dal (S), he said there was no democracy in most regional parties, including the JD(S). Decisions of a person and his family members would be prominent in such parties. He claimed that there was democracy in the Congress and the leadership respected all workers.

Mr. Prakash admitted that he too was in the race for the party ticket from Harpanahalli. He would not pressure the party to give him ticket to contest from Harpanahalli. If the party gave him ticket, he would contest, otherwise he would support the party’s candidate, he said.

Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, treasurer of the KPCC, said that the Congress had been champion of the poor and the oppressed. It had a broad plan to eradicate poverty.

He alleged that the Janata Dal (S) and the BJP had misappropriated funds when they were in power.

Alam Veerabhadrappa declared that Mr. Prakash be the Congress candidate from Harpanahalli. This led to resentment among many ticket aspirants on the dais, who opposed his remark. Mr. Shivashankarappa and K.C. Kondaiah told Mr. Veerabhadrappa not to make such remarks when the process was on to select candidates. Mr. Veerabhadrappa later tender apology. P.T. Parameshwara Naik, former MLA, welcomed the gathering. Chandrashekar Bhat, Abdul Jabbar, S. Chidanandappa, Chennabasava Gowda, D. Basavaraj, and S.V. Ramachandrappa attended the meeting.
