Cuttack railway station gets Wi-Fi facility

CUTTACK: Railway Board Chairman K.C. Jena on Sunday inaugurated the Wi-Fi facility at the railway station here to facilitate the travelling passengers to be in touch with their professional and personal activities through Internet.

“This state-of-the-art facility at the station has been installed for the first time in any part of the eastern India,” Mr Jena said after inaugurating the facility in his native city. Any passenger can access the Internet at the station with the help of a Wi-fi enabled laptop and credit card of any bank for online booking of Internet usage time, he added.

The Wi-Fi facility at railway stations is being provided by M/s RailTel and about 53 stations across the country have been getting the facility since long. Surprisingly, not a single railway station under the East Coast Railway (ECR) was in the list.

After sincere effort by ECR General Manager A.K. Goyal, M/s RailTel has agreed to bring the railway stations located under ECR to get the facility. Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam stations would get the facility in near future, sources said.

The facility would help the bonafide passengers to enjoy wireless broadband access, access to train reservation system, check e-mail, and surf Internet at railway platforms while travelling, Mr Jena said.

Mr. Jena also inaugurated a merchants’ lounge in the city near Malgodown. The lounge with a plinth area of 50 square metres was completed in three months at a cost of Rs. 5 lakhs.

The Railway Board chairman also inspected and reviewed the work of the second railway bridge over the Mahanadi river. He said that as soon as the bridges over the rivers Kathjodi and Kuakhai were completed, the double track between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar would be operational.
