BERHAMPUR: The Red Ribbon Express reached Berhampur on Sunday. It aims to create public awareness about HIV and AIDS in Ganjam district, the most HIV-prone district of the Orissa. On Sunday morning the Red Ribbon Express was welcomed at the Berhampur stadium through a public meeting which was attended by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Chandrasekhar Sahu, MLAs of the district, officials of Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS), Ganjam District Collector V.K. Pandian. Around 2,000 women from different parts of the district were brought to the railway station. A rally against HIV was taken out in the city. Cultural troupes attached to the Red Ribbon Express moved out to different rural areas of the district to create AIDS awareness in rural areas of Ganjam district which are prone to migration of labourers. The migrant labourers of the district are the most HIV-prone group in the district and through them HIV is getting transmitted to the ignorant women in the city. The district administration, therefore, decided to use the Red Ribbon Express to target the women folk of rural areas of the district who get infected by HIV due to follies of their husbands.
