Kashempur playing a waiting game

Staff Correspondent

He is yet to decide on constituency

BIDAR: The former Minister Bandeppa Kashempur of the Janata Dal (Secular) seems to be playing a waiting game with regard to the selection of a constituency in the district to contest in the coming elections.

Mr. Kashempur’s name did not figure in the list of Janata Dal (S) candidates seeking party ticket, which was announced by president of the district unit Baburao Gudge on Saturday.

President of the State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) Merajuddin Patel has sought ticket to contest again from the Humnabad Assembly segment and the former MLA Mallikarjun Khuba from Basavakalyan.

Sources close to Mr. Kashempur said that he would take a decision on contesting the election after other parties announced their lists of candidates.

Mr. Kashempur is yet to decide on whether to contest from Bidar or Bidar South, newly carved constituency in the district, it is learnt. During the delimitation exercise, the Bidar segment was bifurcated into Bidar and Bidar South constituencies.

It is said that a former Minister is keen on contesting from Bidar and this has made Mr. Kashempur to be “cautious” on his move.

Mr. Kashempur told The Hindu on Saturday said that the date for applying for party ticket had been extended and he would submit his application at the party’s head office in Bangalore.

In the last legislative Assembly, Mr. Kashempur, Mr. Khuba and Mr. Patel represented Janata Dal (S). Mr. Kashempur was the Minister for Agriculture in the Kumaraswamy Cabinet.

In the 2004 elections, Mr. Kashempur contested as an independent candidate and won by a huge margin of votes.

Mr. Kashempur joined the Janata Dal (S) during the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Bidar. Mr. Kashempur lost as a Congress candidate in the 1999 elections.
