Karnataka XI rides on Mudappa’s brace

MUMBAI: Mudappa’s nose for goals provided the needed edge to Karnataka XI’s attack as two opportunistic strikes from him snuffed out the challenge from Bombay Engineering Group (Pune) 3-0 in the 46th all-India Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament here on Sunday.

Anthony Embron converted a penalty stroke to seal victory for Karnataka XI in the quarterfinal league at the Mahindra Stadium.

Karnataka XI controlled the flow of play and switched the ball effortlessly across the length and breadth of the field.

Mudappa, a former trainee of the Sports Authority of India (Bangalore), scored the first goal with a neat trap and tap from an acute angle. The second was a goalmouth deflection, the forward connecting a long hit by Ronald Kiran from the near the centreline.

Anthony converted the stroke with a scoop to the roof of the net.

The BEG players tried hard to fight back, but were no match for the cohesion and understanding displayed by Karnataka XI, which takes on Indian Oil on Monday.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Academy, Mumbai Customs and Indian Navy qualified from the preliminary phase.

The event is being organised by the Mumbai Hockey Association.
