PARIS: Tsegaye Kebede won the Paris Marathon on Sunday on his first attempt with a personal best time. The Ethiopian finished in 2:06.37 seconds, easily beating his previous best marathon time of 2:08.16s at Amsterdam last year.

Despite rain and wind, Kebede was only four seconds slower than the course record of 2:06.33s, set by Mike Rotich of Kenya in 2003.

Kebede was level with Moses Arusei of Kenya heading into the final 2km, but Arusei began to tire and Kebede broke away with about half-a-kilometre remaining.

Arusei finished second in 2:06.47s, while James Rotich of Kenya was third in 2:07.10s.

Martha Komu of Kenya won the women’s race in 2:25.29s, ahead of Worknech Tola of Ethiopia. — AP
