This is with reference to news item “Loan waiver to benefit 44 lakh people” (The Hindu 18-03.) The State Government has decided to waive arrears of loans up to one lakh availed by SCs, STs, BCs, Minorities, physically challenged and women from their respective corporations is a very good gesture. However, it is also, the duty of the government to consider the plight of people belonging to forward classes who are economically very poor. Economic backwardness is not confined to SCs, STs, BCs, Minorities only but there are many people among the forward classes struggling to make a living. There is no meaningful criteria to select the beneficiary on the economic status as most of the beneficiaries are living comfortably than those belonging to the forward class. In these days of vote bank politics who is bothered about the real backward people. J.P. Reddy, Nalgonda Complacent parentsPolio is an infectious disease and polio paralysis is almost always irreversible. Polio virus spreads among children with lightning speed. The harsh reality is that today one third of the World’s polio cases are in India. Complacency is the key factor for the deadly come back of the disease. In India even middleclass, urban parents tend to neglect vaccinating their children. The pulse polio immunizatin programme being executed by the Government of India is unprecedented in public health history. To it a total success it requires a more comprehensive implementation. M. Satyanarayana Rao, Hanamkonda
