Downtrend in organised sector jobs

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Employment in the organised sector appears to be on the downswing in the State.

According to the Directorate of Employment and Training, as quoted in the State Economic Review, the total employment in the organised sector, which had been increasing marginally since 1996, started declining beginning 2000. The total number of persons employed in the sector was 11.76 lakh in December 1996. The number grew to 12.51 lakh in December 2000. It fell to 11.02 lakh by 2005. There was a marginal increase to 11.11 lakh in December 2006. Of the 11.11 lakh workers in the organised sector in the State in December 2006, 4.3 lakh were women and 6.75 lakh men. Of the total, 6.07 lakh were employed in the public sector and 5.04 lakh in the private sector. Of those in the public sector, 2.77 lakh were State government employees, 2.27 lakh quasi-government employees, 0.77 lakh Union government employees and 0.26 lakh local government employees.

An analysis of the growth of employment in public and private establishments in the State in 2007 revealed that mining and quarrying registered sharpest decrease of 85.9 per cent, followed by 22.7 per cent in construction, 1.7 per cent in community, social and personal services, 1.6 per cent in agricultural and allied industries and 0.6 per cent in transport, storage and communication. The total placement through employment exchanges too is on the decline in the State since 2000. The State’s placement through employment exchanges plummeted from a high of 23,012 in 2000 to 8,711 in 2004.

Although the figure grew to 11,450 in 2005, it again declined to 10,472 in 2006 and further to 9,158 in 2007.
