Rahul opted out: Sonia
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday admitted that she would have liked to have her son Rahul Gandhi enter the Union Council of Ministers.
Interacting informally with journalists after the swearing-in ceremony of seven Ministers of State at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Ms. Gandhi said Mr. Gandhi’s induction was considered. But he opted out, preferring to concentrate on party work.
Ms. Gandhi said her son felt that he would not be able to do justice to both assignments. As to why other young Congressmen had not been given a ministerial berth, she said her party’s hands were tied because of coalition compulsions.
Asked whether this would be the last reshuffle of his Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “There is no finality in such matters.”
