Brisk sales: Markets in Bangalore witnessed a heavy rush of festival shoppers on the eve of Ugadi on Sunday. BANGALORE: Hectic preparations are on here to celebrate Ugadi, the festival that marks New Year according to the Hindu almanac.
As usual, there was heavy rush for purchasing mango and neem leaves, fruits, “panchanga” and new clothes on the eve of Ugadi on Sunday. People were seen registering their names for special poojas in temples. Russell Market and K.R. Market were streaming with festival shoppers. A bunch of mango and neem leaves was being sold at Rs. 5 each. There was demand for flower garlands, especially those made of marigold. A large number of people visited temples and religious institutions where “panchangas” were being sold. Shopping areas such as Commercial Street, Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazar were also teeming with people who had come to purchase new clothes. Some shops had discount offers on dress materials and gold ornaments. The festival is popular as “Chandramana Ugadi” which is determined by the movement of the moon.
