Grievances of a custodian

The question bundles of X Standard examination were handed over to the custodians of the different centres at 10 p.m at 20. 3. 2008 in Tiruvallur District.

The headmasters, who were custodians, were waiting from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (12 hours) with hired vehicles to receive the bundles in the ‘centralised’ centre at Tiruvallur. Is it not risk to carry the secret documents at night without any security?

I suggest that the government adopt the same procedure to transport and deliver the ballot papers to the booths at the time of election.

In this age of quick communication through cell phones, the custodians may be directed to assemble at proper time when the bundles are ready to deliver. The department is not reimbursing the actual hire charges of the vehicles to transport the bundles. May I request the government to redress the grievances of the custodians.

Postal savings scheme

This refers to the news item in The Hindu dated 31. 3. 08, “Postal savings schemes retain popularity”.

No doubt, the schemes are popular, that too, among senior citizens.

I would like to make the following suggestions.

(1) The bonus offered under the ‘MIS’ scheme originally and later, discontinued may again be restored.

(2) In most post offices, the staff managing SB counters are short. If the required staffs are posted, old people like me need not stand in long queue every month for withdrawal of monthly interest

(3) The State may also recommend to the Centre these suggestions, since out of the deposits collected through small savings, it gets a major portion for their development works.

Waterbodies

The width of the Cooum, Adayar rivers and major channels has been reduced by encroachments.

As a result, the street drains, constructed at the cost of hundreds of crores, have become wasteful as they cannot discharge rainwater into the channels and rivers.

Moreover, the use of part of land on the edge of the Coovum river for raising roadways, as proposed, will entail a heavy flooding of Chennai and a large loss of life. .

Worst condition of road

A road overbridge has been under construction, of course, for quite a long time, to link Guindy with Alandur.

On being pointed out about the worst condition of the stretch of Chakrapani Road at Maduvankarai on one side of the ROB, the authorities laid a black-topped road. However, rain has played havoc with this road.

Large and numerous pits have formed on this road, making it difficult for the heavy traffic to traverse. To add fuel to fire recently, a long trench was dug up on one side of this road, and the soil, instead of being cleared, was allowed to harden in big mounds, and the heavy vehicles, including MTC buses and lorries, found it difficult to travel on this road. The width of the road here also is narrow, and piling up of vehicles during rush hour is being witnessed for quite some time. Now, this soil, instead of totally clearing it, was spread unwisely onto the surface of the road, and during the recent rain, the road became slushy and slippery, forcing the vehicles, especially two-wheelers, to take to alternative, circuitous routes to reach Anna Salai.

Will the authorities do something to have a good, black-topped and wide road to enable a smooth flow of traffic here?

Escalators not working

At the Chintadripet Metro Rail Station, there are three escalators and two lifts. Now that the train facility has been extended upto Velacherry, there are more users at this station.

But, the escalators and lifts have not been functioning. When it was pointed out to the clerks there, they said that the contract period was over and there was none to run them. Will the Railways set right the lifts and escalators?
