Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Institute of Labour and Employment (KILE) is organising a three-day Bamboo Fest at the University Students Centre here from Wednesday. An exhibition-cum-sale of bamboo products and a workshop for cane, reed and wicker craftsmen are the highlights of the event aimed at promoting bamboo products and bettering the quality of life of the craftsmen. As many as 200 officials and trade union representatives are expected to participate in the workshop. Other programmes include a trade union meeting, a women’s meeting, an open forum, competitions in manufacture of bamboo and reed products, cultural programmes and training classes in labour laws. The winners of the competition will be given cash awards and a citation by KILE. Workers’ societies, women’s self help groups, physically challenged persons and cooperative institutions will be allotted stalls at concessional rates. KILE has also organised drawing, cartoon and quiz competitions for schoolchildren in connection with the festival.
