dated April 8, 1958: Incidence of small-pox

The constitution of expert committees to investigate the causes of the rise in the incidence of small-pox in the country in recent months and to suggest short-term and long-term measures for controlling the spread of the disease has been recommended to the State Governments by the Union Health Ministry. In a communication to the States, the Health Ministry has stated that these committees could also be entrusted with the investigation of the outbreak of cholera in the States and asked to suggest preventive measures for the control and ultimate eradication of cholera. The Health Ministry says the need for these measures has arisen because there have been reports “from many States in India of unusual rise in the incidence of small-pox,” which has increased significantly during the early months of 1958 and which “indicates the possibility of a further large-scale outbreak of the disease.”
