NEW KID ON THE GRID: Ashwin Sundar will be driving for German team Ma-Con Motor Sports.

NEW DELHI: Chennai-lad Ashwin Sundar is the new kid on the grid from India in the international racing arena.

The shy 17-year-old will be driving for German racing team, Ma-Con Motor Sports, for three years in the German Formula Volkswagen ADAC championship.

Ashwin, National champion in the Formula LGB Swift Class, is among the eight drivers chosen after three testing sessions held on February 28 and 29. They drove Formula Konig testing cars with the Volkswagen engine.

Ashwin joins the likes of Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhok and Armaan Ebrahim as products of the JK Tyre club.

The ADAC championship consists of eight rounds of races to be held on various circuits in Germany. Should Ashwin finish among the top three or win at least one of the races, he can look forward to racing in the F3 German series next year.

The tie-up with Ma-Con has also helped Ashwin make a possible entry to the F3 European Series in 2010.

Dream come true

“For me, it’s a dream come true,” said Ashwin, confessing that he was more nervous facing mediapersons than participants on the racetrack.

“Interestingly, Ashwin is also a former National two-wheeler champion.

“It is a great platform and I never expected it to come so soon,” said the soft-spoken teenager who pursues his academics through correspondence.

Ma-Con’s owner Marian Hamprecht was all praise for his new find.

“I wanted someone nice like Ashwin. He raced in snow and rain, something he is not accustomed to, and finished well. I am truly impressed by his racing skills.”
