PORT-OF-SPAIN: West Indies named its 16-man squad on Monday for the three-match one-day cricket series against Sri Lanka, starting on Thursday. Chris Gayle leads the team, which includes all the 11 players who beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second Test on Sunday to level the two-match series 1-1. Sulieman Benn, who made his Test debut in the first Test in Guyana, is the only rookie in the squad. The 6 foot-7 inch (2.01m) left-arm spinner was a stand-out for Barbados in January’s regional Stanford Twenty20 tournament and is a useful batsman. There is a recall for power-hitting all-rounder Kieron Pollard, who was part of the West Indies squad for the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean and played one match. Wicket-keeper Patrick Browne, all-rounder Darren Sammy and batsman Runako Morton also join their Test teammates for the series.
The first two matches are at Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, on Thursday and Saturday, with the last match on April 15 at the Beausejour Stadium in St. Lucia. The West Indies squad: Chris Gayle (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sulieman Benn, Patrick Browne, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Runako Morton, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor. — AP
