Theatre workshop for children

Staff Reporter

Twelve-day-long theatre workshop at the Ernakulam Children’s Park from Tuesday

KOCHI: At a time when the younger generation is obsessed with the Shah Rukhs and Hrithik Roshans of the tinsel world, an effort is being made to initiate children into the powerful medium of theatre.

Children in the city will have a close look at the intricacies of drama at a 12-day-long theatre workshop, starting here at the Ernakulam Children’s Park on Tuesday.

The workshop is part of a two-month-long summer camp being organised by the District Child Welfare Committee.

Eminent personalities from theatre, film world and other walks of life will conduct classes at the workshop.

The workshop will throw light on various aspects of drama and will also focus on developing the proficiency of children in Malayalam language.

Sessions in which theatre personalities of yesteryear share their experience with the camp members are expected to instil in the youngsters a passion for theatre and inspire them to take it up seriously.

The workshop will conclude with the participants staging a drama showcasing the skills they have acquired during the course of the workshop.

The summer camp will also introduce children to traditional folk arts, many of which are on the verge of extinction. Another highlight of the camp is a literary camp aimed at enabling children to identify creative skills lying dormant in them and to encourage them to groom these inherent skills.

The camp to be held from May 1 to 10 will impart training in writing story, poem, novel, drama, screenplay and essay. Besides, children will also get a glimpse of the world of journalism.

Training in skating, wrestling and gymnastics is already under way. The response has been very good and as the camp progresses more registrations are expected, organisers said.

Cultural programmes by famed artists and film stars, competitions and game shows will light up the evenings at the camp.

High school and Plus two level students can attend the camp. For more details contact: 0484 – 2361050, 94471 51050
