and Schedule Tribes

Chitradurga: The State Government has released Rs. 22 lakh for the modernisation of the rangamandira here.

Improving the acoustics, lighting arrangements and other works have been pending for long for want of funds.

The Department of Kannada Culture has invited tenders for the modernisation work, according to Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas.

He said that special lighting arrangements for better visual effects would be made at the rangamandira. The modernisation work was expected to be completed in two months.

In the wake of the audio problem, those organising dramas had been hiring audio systems. They would not face this problem once work on the acoustics was completed, Mr. Biswas said.

The rangamandira would not be given for political parties for their meetings and functions.

The auditorium was meant for cultural, entertainment and educational programmes, he said.

The department had taken steps to encourage folk culture of the district. Officials of the Department of Kannada and Culture said that the department would identify cultural troupes of the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes soon.

A sum of Rs. 10,000 each would be given to 12 troupes of the SCs and Rs. 10,000 each to six troupes of the STs. The department would also identify individual performers from these communities and they would be given Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 as encouragement fund, he said.

Having a rangamandira here was a long cherished dream of the people of the district and work on it commenced 10 years ago.

Many organisations have been demanding that the rangamandira be named after Tipu Sultan, Ta. Ra. Su., Madakari Nayaka, Nijalingappa and Pehelwan Nanjappa. However, no decision has been taken on this regard.
