NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday imposed costs of Rs.50,000 on a Supreme Court lawyer for filing a frivolous suit seeking damages of Rs. 60 lakh against the Registrar-General of the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police Commissioner and the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited in a case of scuffle with a telephone booth operator in front of the New Lawyers’ Chambers on Bhagwan Dass Road in the Capital five years ago. Imposing the costs, Justice S. N. Aggarwal said the lawyer had filed the suit just to satisfy his ego and corner publicity at the cost of harassing the respondents. “I deem it proper to nip this frivolous and vexatious suit in the bud to avoid undue harassment of the protracted litigation to them (respondents),” Mr. Justice Mudgal stated. The respondents in their separate replies opposed the plea for damages submitting that the lawyer had approached the Court late as the Limitation Act puts a limit of one year for filing a suit after the occurrence of an incident. They submitted that there was no cause of action against them.
