Grand celebrations: Delhi’s Town Hall in Chandni Chowk illuminated on Monday to mark MCD’s Golden Jubilee. NEW DELHI: On the occasion of its Golden Jubilee Day celebrations on Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi announced free primary education for every child studying in its primary schools. In a statement, Mayor Arti Mehra said an amount of Rs.200 would be given to each of the over 4.5 lakh girl students studying in the city’s municipal primary schools. “We are doing this to encourage the girl child to undergo primary education. This scheme will cost the civic body over Rs.9 crore. The amount would be provided during the ensuing academic session,” she said. Various fundsMCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the exemption in fees would also be extended to include various funds such as the Boys’ Fund, PTA Fund, Hobby Fund and Cubs and Bulbul Fund. “During the financial year ending on March 31, the civic body has made a property tax recovery of over Rs.1,000 crore which is an all-time record. We have also launched new schemes including construction of the 28-storey civic centre at Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, building the first working women’s hostel in Rohini and chalking an advertisement policy for Delhi with approval of the Supreme Court,” he added. Among other laudable achievements were the development of a new software and GPS system to check unauthorised constructions and carrying out de-silting of drains throughout the year, said Mr. Gupta. MCD House leader Subhash Arya said one of the major achievements of the civic body was enabling the functioning of the environment-friendly and economical CNG crematorium. “Our ‘MCD Aapke Dwar’ scheme envisions the placement of kiosks at 8,000 sites across the Capital to facilitate payment of property tax, booking of public places and registration of births and deaths. Other efforts are development of multi-level parking lots under existing parks, modernisation of the Ghazipur abattoir and provision of online sanctioning of building plans,” he added.
