HYDERABAD: Presenting a bright picture of the economy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy expressed the hope that the progress would be sustained and the State would receive more rain this year in line with a pattern during the last four years of the Congress government. “The economy of the State and farmers and agricultural labour, in particular, had improved year after year on account of good rain since 2004,” he said, after C.V.B. Subrahmaniam rendered the almanac for the Telugu new year, Sarvadhari, predicting bountiful rain at the official Ugadi celebrations here on Monday. Telugu cultureRavindra Bharati, venue of the celebrations, was tastefully decorated to reflect the Telugu culture. A decorated bull, a full grown goat and a rural soothsayer were positioned while folk and tribal dancers swayed to traditional music. The Chief Minister released the agricultural forecast published by the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University. He said development and welfare programmes of the government had been successfully implemented in tandem during the Congress regime. Referring to the Rs. 2-a-kilo rice scheme to be launched by the government on Wednesday, he said it would benefit 85 per cent of the poor who would get rice sold in open market at Rs. 18 to 20 a kg. On the contrary, the scheme implemented during Telugu Desam regime covered only 30 per cent of the poor. The beneficiaries got poor quality rice available in open market at Rs three a kg.
