ANGADIPURAM: The State’s first ever exclusive cricket stadium was inaugurated by Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar here on Monday. The stadium, which has five pitches and the sprinkler system, will host its first match later this month when the Dr. M.S. Nair all-Kerala cricket tournament gets underway. Once the pavilion is constructed, the Kerala Cricket Association-owned ground could begin hosting first class matches as well. Vijayakumar said the sports quota in State police services would be increased to 10 per cent. Minimum criterionThe minimum criterion for sportspersons is participation in district-level meets in both team and individual events. Those interested in taking part in the trials should report at the venue at 8 a.m. with their sports kits and relevant documents supporting their age. The schedule and venue: April 16: Parade Ground (Kannur); April 17: St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri (Kozhikode); April 18: Corporation Stadium (Thrissur); April 19: Nehru Stadium (Kottayam); April 24: Central Stadium and Swimming Pool, Nandiyode (Thiruvananthapuram). Selection trialsTrials to select trainees to centralised sports hostels and college hostels run by the Kerala State Sports Council for 2008-09 academic year will be held at various venues in Thiruvananthapuram from April 16 to 24. Trials will be held in athletics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, hockey (women), handball (women) and football (men) for selection to college hostels. For admission to +1 course in centralised sports hostels, the trails will be held in athletics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, handball, football (girls), kho-kho, kabaddi, taekwondo, judo, swimming and fencing. Easy for Central ExciseCentral Excise drubbed St. Albert’s College 7-0 in a Group ‘A’ match of the Ernakulam district premier division football league at the FACT Ground, Udyogamandal in Kochi on Monday. In Group ‘B,’ Cochin Port Trust blanked Golden Threads 2-0 at the Maharaja’s College Ground with Raphael Siddi and Sananth netting the goals. The results: Group A: Central Excise bt St. Albert’s College 7-0; Group B: Cochin Port Trust bt Golden Threads 2-0.
