KOCHI: The State government has formulated a comprehensive project to make the State garbage-free, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said on Monday. The Minister was speaking after inaugurating a national seminar on decentralised waste treatment, organised by the Centre for Rural Development and Appropriate Technology of the Cochin University of Science and Technology here on Monday. “Centralised waste treatment facilities are not be advisable to a State like Kerala which has a high density of population. The State may have to face serious consequences in various sectors if it fails to put in place decentralised waste treatment facilities. The local bodies have a key role to play in setting up such facilities,” he said. Gangan Pratap, Vice-Chancellor of the university, presided. Prizes distributedThe Minister distributed prizes to the Attingal and Koilandi municipalities and the Kongad, Puthu Pariyaram and Thrikovilvattom panchayats for their initiatives in the garbage treatment sector. He also released a book on the social responsibility of corporates, penned by D. Rajasenan, by handing over a copy to the Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Rajasenan, M. Bhaskaran, chairman of the Mayors’ Chamber, M.V. Bhaskaran Master, president of the District Panchayat Association, and I.S. Bright Singh, member of the university Syndicate, were among those who spoke.
