Dacoits loot Rs. 5 lakh from SBI

CUTTACK: A robbery and another bank dacoity in Cuttack city on Monday have once again exposed the chinks in the commissioner system of police in the city. Few days ago, when the city police were rejoicing after nabbing a gang of robbers, Monday’s incidents have put a big question mark on the functioning of the force under the new system of policing.

A businessman was robbed of Rs. 40 lakh from a busy marketplace in the city around 11 a.m. on the day and around the same time, dacoits decamped with Rs. 5 lakhs from a nationalised bank after firing three gunshots and injuring the bank cashier in suburban areas of Jagatpur, about 20 km from here.

Although two separate cases have been registered, one each at Mangalabag and Jagatpur police stations, police were yet to get any clue about the criminals till evening. “We are on the job and have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits”, said a city senior police officer.

According to police, one Kamlesh Jain, a transporter was carrying Rs. 40 lakh after withdrawing the same from the HDFC bank in Bajrakabati Road when one person deceived him and ran away with the amount. Jain in his FIR said that while he was about to drive his car after keeping the bag containing the cash in the rear seat, a man stopped his vehicle to inform that some of his currencies are lying in the ground.

“When I got down to see, the man ran away picking up my bag from the rear seat”, Jain said in his FIR. Similarly, some unidentified persons banged into the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Gopinathpur and threatened the bank cashier Bhubaneswar Samal to hand over the cash. When he refused, they fired at him and decamped with Rs 4.98 lakhs from his drawer.
