DAVANGERE: Shamanur Shivashankarappa, former MLA and Congress leader, said on Monday that the coming election would be his last and he had decided to contest owing to the pressure from his supporters and party workers. Addressing a party workers’ meeting at Bashanagar here, Mr. Shivashankarappa said that he had decided not to contest any election. “But many of my followers and party workers insisted that I must contest this election in the interests of the party.” Hence, he had no option but to contest. “This will be my last election,” the veteran Congress leader said and appealed to the people to support him. Waiving the loans of farmers across the Country by the Congress-led Union Government may help the party in a big way in the coming elections, Mr. Shivashankarappa said. The Janata Dal (S) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had quarrelled over many issues and both were responsible for early elections in the State. Holding elections frequently was not advisable to countries such as India, which was on the path of development, he said. Claiming that the people had realised that the Congress alone could give an effective government, he hoped that they would vote the party to power in the State. Abdul Jabbar, Yasin Peer, Abdul Bashir Sab, A.C. Jayanna, Ayub Pailwan, S. Mallikarjun, and Imtiyaz Hussain were present.
