Pension delay

I am drawing pension in Punjab National Bank, Tiruvarur. Because bank accounts’ closing date was April 1, I requested that my pension be given on April 2. I was told by the bank officials that the bills would be received on April 3 and, after clearance, the payment could be made only on April 7. This day being Telugu New Year Day, I would be able to get the pension only on April 8. As a pensioner, I have never come across such an inordinate delay in the past. Authorities should understand the inconvenience caused to the pensioners.

ST status needed

Recently, Tamil Nadu government announced a welfare board for the Narikuravar community. The community is the most backward section, both educationally and socially, in the State but they fall under the backward category in the caste list. I request the government to bring the community under Schedule Tribe category. Nearly 24 Kuravar communites are in backward list, Kuravan in the S.C. list and Malai Kuravan in the S.T. list. All the Kuravas including Narikuravar should be brought under the S.T. list.

Monkey menace

Monkeys are a menace in and around Srinivasa Nagar, T.V.Koil. At times they tend to attack aged peopke and young kids. I request the authorities to take action to catch these monkeys.

Pitfalls of progress

The failure of municipal authorities to close the pits dug for the underground drainage scheme in Thanjavur town is causing hardship to road-users. In some cases, it has led to fatal accidents. I request the Thanjavur Municipal authorities to take steps for closing the pits at once in the interest of saving precious lives.

Glaring headlights

The failure to paint bull’s eye on the headlights of the two and four-wheelers is often leading to fatal accidents not only on highways, but also on the roads in the towns. Till a few years ago, traffic police and transport authorities used to take serious note of this violation and book those who did not obey this rule. Now they are turning a blind eye to this violation. I request the authorities to ensure that all vehicles display bull’s eye on the headlights.

P. Gnanasekar,

No toilets in bus stand

The makeshift bus stand in Mayiladuthurai Town for buses proceeding to towns like Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, etc. lacks basic amenities like toilets, potable water and shelter. Moreover when situation warrants, this makeshift bus stand is being converted into ground for holding public meetings organised by political parties, trade unions etc. This causes much inconvenience to the travelling public.

R. Ganesan,

Mayiladuturai

Water tax

All village panchayats should be empowered by the State Government to levy 50 per cent of house tax as ‘water tax’ and another 50 per cent as ‘lighting tax’ for the proper maintenance of reservoirs and the street lights with their own funds. Receipt books should be ordered to be printed separately in the district co-operative presses and their machine numbers notified in the respective village panchayat offices for public scrutiny. As soon as the demands are raised, collections made and the balance struck, the unused receipt books after providing for the arrears outstanding should be notified again, in the offices, for public as well as Auditor’s scrutiny and after a thorough verification, destroyed by the Auditors in the presence of the public. Unless this effective system is pursued in village panchayats, defalcation of money cannot be eliminated by the district administration.

R.S. Moorthy,

Karur

Landline facility

Nowadays, mobile user numbers have increased a lot, Therefore, instead of disconnecting landline facility for non-payment, BSNL can pursuer customers for payment by sending a reminder. This will fetch revenue and connections will be intact.

Core banking failure

Modern inventions like computers and calculators are certainly a boon to mankind. But when it goes berserk, a multiplicity of problems and difficulties crop up. One such thing has happened to the Kumbakonam branch of Syndicate bank. Recently, the bank introduced core banking system. For the past one month, the system had failed and computers do not cooperate. The staff members have to plead with agitating customers to come on the next day.

Tomorrows have come and gone but the system is still in technical paralysis. There is one more issue. The austere bank is issuing a very small pass book.

The entries are illegible. Excepting the cipher, all the other numbers look like zero. The bank should consider issuing a long pass book with bold print, like other banks.

K. Krishnaswamy,

Kumbakonam
