Exorbitant amount

The Ramanathapuram Municipality has fixed Rs.7,500 per house for connecting to the underground drainage system, which is under construction.

The levy of such an exorbitant amount cannot be met out by the middle class and weaker section.

It is the duty of the civic body to provide all sanitation and amenities needed thereon since the public pay property tax.

However, when more funds are required for big schemes, it can be done with assistance from the Central Government without taxing the tax-payers.

Will the authorities do the needful?

Haji Asmabagh Anvardeen,

Ramanthapuram.

Railway station lacks facilities

While announcing the inauguration of a passenger train service from Rameswaram to Chennai via Pudukottai on March 29, R.Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways, said that all the railway stations under Madurai division were being modernised at an estimated cost of Rs.40 crore.

The Ramanathapuram railway station lacks basic facilities. There is no waiting room for the second class passengers. A spacious room with necessary furniture and a toilet have to be constructed early.

A telephone booth with STD facilities should be set up, which will facilitate the passengers to convey urgent message to their kith and kin.

A tiny board with small letters showing the timings of arrival and departure of trains has been put up at the entrance on the top of the wall that cannot be read easily.

So a digital board should be placed at a conspicuous place. Some additional benches should be provided on the platform as the existing benches are not sufficient for the use of the passengers. A modern cafeteria may also be started in this station as the northerners will throng Rameswaram to worship Ramanthasamy temple after the inauguration of the passenger train service directly from Chennai to Rameswaram via Karaikudi.

G. Nagasamy,

Ramanathapuram.
